A handsome, small deciduous shrub bearing clusters of juicy, strong flavoured berries during summer. The fruit contains high amounts of vitamin C and E.
Currants are winter hardy and will grow in most areas. For best results, feed heavily in the first few years to encourage rapid growth.
Use: Poached Black Currants:
Combine 375g of sugar, juice of 2 lemons and 500ml of water. Bring to the boil and add 500g of Black (red or white) currants, then cover with greaseproof paper, bring to the boil, take off heat and allow to cool in cooking syrup. Serve well chilled. Can be used on its own or served on toasted fruit bread.
Eat fresh or use in juice, juice components, jelly, ham and specialty products such as candies and liqueurs. These attractive plants are used as a small hedge around vegetable gardens. Click a recipe below.
Care: Prefers organic matter, and mulch to retain soil water and keep the soil cool. Prune heavily during the winter to remove older and less productive wood. Leave shoots of approx. 10cm to bear the following seasons crop. Full Sun Height to 1.5M
